History of NVT

The NVT Vision Rehabilitation System is based upon initial concepts developed by Mrs. Betty Hill (dec) (Neuro Psychologist/Speech Pathologist) and Mr. Don Verlander in the early 1980s. Mrs. Hill worked in a major rehabilitation hospital in Melbourne, Australia and Mr. Verlander worked at the Royal Guide Dogs Association of Australia which was situated across the road from Royal Talbot Hospital. Together they recognized the "gap" in providing vision rehabilitation therapy to patients with acquired or traumatic brain injury in both the medical and blindness rehabilitation sectors.

In Australia the 1980's the primary vision impairment agencies were unaware or had not invested significant resources into rehabilitation of Neurologic Vision Deficits. Major stroke and rehabilitation hospitals also neglected the need for a standardised functional visual assessment as part of a minimum standard of care in the rehabilitation of brain injury.

In 1989 in conjunction with Don Verlander, Ray Liddle, Director of Adelaide Biomedical, began production of a manually operated scanning device. The growing demand for services to people with Neurological Vision Deficits in Australia has lead to over 30 of these scanning devices being installed into Guide Dogs Associations around Australia. In 1998 commencement of research studies using the scanning device allowed for the broadening of the collaborative team to include additional clinical expertise provided by Allison Hayes and Gayle Clarke, both of whom had numerous years of providing vision therapy for the ABI/TBI population.

The development of a software program to provide the necessary standardisation of assessment and training processes and the documentation of client information was seen as a necessity. In conjunction with all parties, Greg Liddle began to develop the specialised software program for the prototype scanning device.

Neuro Vision Technology Pty. Ltd. was established in July 2005 which encapsulated and capitalised on the knowledge developed by the original five founding directors over the past 25 years or more. The NVT Vision Rehabilitation System was developed with clinical expertise and knowledge in the assessment, management and therapy of vision and cognitive function associated with Neurological Vision Deficits.
