NVT Scanning Device

The NVT Scanning Device is a training tool which provides standardised evaluation and training protocols.

The device documents the presence of:

  • Neurological vision impairments, such as a homonymous hemianopia, quadrantanopia, relative field loss etc
  • Visual spatial neglect or inattention
  • Speed of visual processing
  • Visual memory
  • Visual spatial deficits

The standardised functional assessment which takes approximately 20 minutes, utilises a presentation of coloured lights (LEDs) displayed on a horizontal panel placed at eye level approximately 30cms from the patient. The panel of lights extends approx 80cms either side central fixation, with the lights at the ends of the panel subtending an angle of approximately 70 degrees from midline. In the presence of a homonymous hemianopia and other neurological vision deficits the patient is required to utilise both head movement and eye movement towards the affected visual field in order to detect the light stimulus.

The results of the functional evaluation then form the basis of a vision training program to improve the client's awareness and understanding of the nature of their vision impairment. The NVT Scanning Device is used to teach a pattern of systematic visual search strategies from the perimeter of the effected visual field towards the intact visual field. These training exercises utilise patterns of lights that reinforce an efficient and functional speed of scanning to allow for accurate detection of all stimuli. The aim is to teach the compensatory scanning skill until it becomes an automatic response.

Together with the results of the NVT scanning assessment, additional validated assessments form the basis of outcome measures for the NVT scanning therapy program. All assessment results taken pre and post training can be documented via the software package and comparisons made for individual clients and between clients.

The NVT therapy program then transfers visual scanning strategies established using the NVT Scanning Device into all aspects of activities of daily living (ADL) and mobility.

The NVT Scanning Device is portable allowing assessments and training to be carried out in the Acute Hospital, Rehabilitation Hospitals or Client Home.

The objective of the NVT Vision Rehabilitation System is to provide a standardised vision training program to address the deficits in visual processing associated with neurological vision deficits to maximise the use of their remaining vision by adopting compensatory scanning strategies and to become as safe and independent as possible.

Improving the quality of life of your patients by addressing vision loss from brain injury.
